Knight News Challenge Gives $3.5m in Grants

The latest round of Knight News Challenge grants is out. The theme this year: strengthening the Internet. Among the 19 projects funded are mapping Internet ownership in Europe; new measurement tools for online censorship and rights violations; and verification and collaboration tools.

SOPA Awards Highlight Asia Investigative Reporting

More proof of investigative journalism's global impact: Here are winners of the just-announced SOPA awards (Society of Publishers in Asia) for investigative reporting, including a report on how Phnom Penh voting districts have more than 145,000 "ghost" voters. Also impressive: winners of reporting on women, human rights, and the environment.

SCOOP Macedonia Story Wins Investigative Award

The series of video articles by the journalist Menche Atanasova Tochi about the pollution of the plant "Feni", supported by SCOOP Macedonia, won the second prize for best investigative story for 2013, awarded by the Macedonian Institute for Media. The stories have been awarded because they contain authentic testimonials, exclusive footage and relevant information.

European Press Prize Winners Announced

Congratulations to all the winners of the European Press Prize 2013. The Investigative Reporting Award went to Steve Stecklow, Babak Dehghanpisheh and Yeganeh Torbati of Reuters for their revelations about "the assets of the Ayatollah", an account of the economic empire behind Iran's Supreme Leader.

Giannina Segnini Wins Garcia Marquez Award

Giannina Segnini, who leads the investigative data unit at La Nacion in Costa Rica, won the Gabriel Garcia Marquez award for excellence in journalism. The jury highlighted “her extraordinary contribution to the quest for truth through investigative journalism and the use of the potential of new technologies in reporting.”

CEI SEEMO Award Winners

The winners of the CEI SEEMO Award for Outstanding Merits in Investigative Journalism 2013 have been announced: the Bosnian-Herzegovinian reporter Mahir Šahinović was awarded in the section 'Professional Journalists', Bulgarian Rosen Tsvetkov in the section 'Young Professional Journalists'.

Investigative Awards Honor Moldova, Africa

Free Press Unlimited, the Dutch media development NGO, has honored investigative reporting efforts in Moldova and sub-Saharan Africa with two awards. The Ziarul de Garda newspaper in Moldova won for its efforts to fight corruption, organized crime, and human rights violations, and the Forum for African Investigative Reporters won for its emerging Africa 911 digital alert network.

2013 Data Journalism Awards Winners

The Data Journalism Awards are the only international awards for Data-Driven Journalism, recognising excellence in this rapidly growing field of journalism. La Nacion of Argentina for “Argentina’s Senate Expenses, 2004-2013.”, Thomson Reuters for “Connected China” and the BBC, for the “Great British Class Calculator”, are among the eight winners.
